VITA Offering Free Tax Assistance

Are you puzzled by the tax law and which credits and deductions you still take? Free help is available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by New River Community Action, Inc. Floyd office.

Help with basic income tax returns is now offered on each Tuesday and Thursday through April and one Saturday per month by appointment only at New River Community Action by volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service.

VITA offers free assistance to those with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English speaking persons, and older taxpayers who file Form 1040EZ, or a basic Form 1040 Federal tax return VITA volunteers also alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible.

Taxpayers who visit a VITA site should bring this year’s tax package, wage and earnings statement (Form W-2) from all employers, interest statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s tax return if available, and other relevant information about income and expenses.

VITA volunteers must complete an IRS training course in basic income tax return preparation before they can assist taxpayers. Volunteers are trained to complete Forms 1040EZ, 1040A, and 1040.
